Navelin

Endelon shouted, pointing, “Tiller, arrest that man!”

“Stop right there, Captain,” the man said. From behind the pillar he withdrew and quickly raised a crossbow. It was loaded and aimed right at the prince. Norances immediately moved in front of Endelon.

“Navelin, this is treason!”

The man chuckled. He was wearing loose brown clothing that was tied at the wrists and ankles. A dark red cloak hung loosely behind him. Deon could see a scabbard at his waist with a silver hilt sticking out from under the cloak. Navelin himself was an oily-looking man with slicked dark hair. His face looked as though it had been broken several times before being put back together by a blind man. It now seemed to be scrunched in towards the center of the nose, dragging the eyes down, the cheeks and mouth up and in to the center. He seemed to have a perpetual scowl.

So this was the man who tried to kill Ylana.

“It’s only treason if I ever had any loyalty to you, Endelon. I didn’t.”

“What are you doing?” Endelon demanded.

“What does it look like? This is an assassination. It’s a pity that it didn’t work out as well as my employer would have liked. He was hoping for something that looked better. When Ylana escaped, I had to delay my plans since I couldn’t be certain how much she knew about them.” He took a few steps away from the pillar.

Norances kept himself between the traitor and his prince. Deon felt his anger bubbling up. The guards were glancing back and forth, unsure of what to do.

Captain Tiller could restrain himself no longer. “Get him you fools, there is only one of him. He can’t hit all of you.”

“I wouldn’t suggest that, Captain,” the assassin said calmly. “You have no idea what you would be unleashing.” He continued his slow pace away from the pillar.

Norances slowly moved to withdraw his bow from his shoulder.

“Don’t do it, Norances.”

The head ranger smiled, but did as he was told. “You cannot possibly escape, Navelin,” the ranger said calmly. Deon didn’t know how he could be so laconic in this situation. “There are five strong warriors here and only one of you. Even if we were to charge and you take down one of us, you can’t reload the crossbow fast enough to kill the prince. If you kill me, then the guards will cut you down. You cannot succeed. There are no options.”

The man smiled. “You have no idea what you are talking about. Try me.”

“I’ve had enough,” Tiller said.

“Tiller, don’t!” Endelon yelled, but the captain paid him no heed.

Drawing his sword, Tiller charged forward with a yell. The other guards followed their captain’s lead and rushed with their polearms forward. The crossbow thunked as the cord captured the bolt and propelled it forward. Captain Tiller didn’t even cry out as the bolt smashed into his chest and ruptured his heart. His legs flew up in the air from the force as he dropped to the ground. The other guards moved in.
